Dichloromethane has the advantages of strong dissolving capacity and low toxicity. It is widely used in the manufacture of safety movie films and polycarbonates. Other applications include coating solvent, metal degreasing agent, aerosol propellant, polyurethane foaming agent, mold release agent, and paint remover.
Dichloromethane is a colorless liquid. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a reaction medium for the preparation of ampicillin, hydroxybenzylpenicillin, cephalosporin, etc. It is also used as a solvent in film production, a solvent for oil dewaxing, an aerosol propellant, an extractant for organic synthesis, a foaming agent for the production of foamed plastics such as polyurethane, and a metal cleaning agent, etc.
In China, dichloromethane is mainly used in film production and the pharmaceutical field. It is also used as a carrier in industrial refrigeration systems.
Dichloromethane is used for grain fumigation and refrigeration in low-pressure freezers and air conditioning devices. It is used as an auxiliary foaming agent in the production of polyether-type urethane foamed plastics and as a foaming agent for extruded polysulfone foamed plastics.
Dichloromethane is also used to make decaffeinated coffee. Coffee is first boiled to dissolve and float the caffeine on the surface, and then dichloromethane is used to remove the caffeine.
